Alternative Saturday Morning Certainty

Postby Larry Lurex » Tue Dec 16, 2008 3:12 pm

Hi all,

I've just discovered this website and forum. Looks like an interesting database to subscribe to but I see it's a closed shop currently.

Anyway, starting Sat, 3 Jan 2009, I'll post an alternative certainty here for a 12 month period. I'll hopefully go head-to-head with the other person who started the thread if he's keen.

Doesn't look like he'll provide much of a challenge but you never know I guess

That's a bit rich, Larry, coming from a newbie! I'm certain Peter will prove more than a challenge!

Regards

SS

PS. Your name could well be Larry, but I'm sure your surname ain't Lurex! Your avatar proves my point

Lol ... I just took a weeks sabbatical and this is what happens. :o
I was just 'luring' Mr Lurex into a false sense of security. Don't worry Sir Spamalot, if Larry's selecting is anything like his taste in music, he'll be mincemeat fairly early on I imagine.

Thanks for the welcome Steve.

Yes, I'll be sticking to the NZ gallops scene. I'm not really into betting across the Tasman at this point in time. Although I am dabbling in the Hong Kong markets which is providing its share of challenges :o

Thirteen years? It must either be an excellent database and/or you're a very loyal customer :P

I look forward to your future comments.

Lightweight cards scheduled for Saturday and with weather forecasts dodgy around the country it makes winner selecting tricky. Therefore I won't be very brave and will head to Kurow to kick off the 2009 certainties.

Kurow R7. #1 Metropolitan
Consistent filly running out an R70 nomination and she should make it back-to-back wins from the ace barrier draw. Has won over 1200m previously and on the expected going. I doubt we'll get rich here but it's a start.

Metropolitan strolls home @ $2.70. Ridiculous price - should've been $1.70 but who's complaining? Beats the awful $1.40 for Coup Align 8)

State of Play after Week 1

Larry - Invest - 1 unit : Return - 2.7 units
Mr BaseRace - Invest 1 unit : Return - 1.4 units
Gil - Invest - 1 unit : Return - 0

Sorry, I couldn't recall your user name so I just guessed it

My punting apprenticeship took place mainly around the Northern circuit in the early 1950s & 60s. So that must make me close to 70 years of age! Have also done a spot of speculating at Epsom and Bath in England as well as Randwick in Sydney.

I do my own crude ratings and I'm guess what you'd call a semi-professional. I've never touched a ratings database in anger but there's no reason they can't work in the right hands. There are people I know that use them but they usually chop and change their systems at the first sight of a losing run. This negates their profit opportunities and they usually give up; blaming the database in the process.

Don't worry, you'll get to know my name by heart by the end of 52 weeks. Just look for it above you on the table.

I'm assuming here that you have now graduated from your apprenceship, at last.

You should have sent them to me. I know all about the chop and change syndrome. In fact I think I invented the phrase. :o

Larry's selection for Sat 10 Jan 09

Postby Larry Lurex » Fri Jan 09, 2009 9:40 pm

Ellerslie R10. #4 Bella Renza

The scratching of Sanjeev certainly makes the task of this sprinter/miler much easier. She owns a decent win strike rate and is coming off a success versus the same class of animal. In fact, the same distance, course, and going to boot. What more could we ask? Line up at the back of the tote folks.

I've got a couple for Ellerslie today but as they're at decent prices I'm keeping them to myself. I'll therefore head to Awapuni and get in before the rains come. In R3, where, hopefully, Regal Secret will notice the weight rise, the last-start run of FAIRGO in a similar race looks a solid pointer.

Looks like another tough day on the punting front with mainly large, open fields at Trentham in particular. I'll head down that way to the Anniversary Hcp and label MacO'Reilly as my nominated charge this week.

He's been racing over ground in his past two starts but owns a fine record over 1600m. And he races best in his current freshened state.

Heading to Trentham again this week and the Group 2 Wellington Cup. #10 Tinseltown is a course and distance winner and shapes up well for this. Won the Group 2 Avondale Cup in fine style and didn't look like Coleman was trying too hard at Ellerslie on New Year's day

Damn, forgot about this again. But I do have a tip, a beauty . . . if you're a fan of crystallised ginger (and who isn't?) mix in some chopped cranberries. Beauuuutiful.
Maybe a horse next week.

Te Rapa R3. #8 Sanjeev
Previous course, distance & going winner with a nice win/strike rate. Should now be at peak fitness.

Hope I'm not too late . . . been chopping ginger and cranberries.
Ter Rapa R5 . . . HERACLES.
He’s a 5yo with just 13 starts, won twice. Doesn’t look too flash on paper, but the second win was in a $35K R90 on Counties Cup day and he then ran second here in a $35K R90 1600m on Waikato Cup day. Since then he’s finished not far away in a $125k Group 2 1600m at Ellerslie — after being slow away — and at his most recent start, and his first at a distance, he finished a good third to Vickezzchardonay, running the 2100m right out.

Te Rapa R5. #4 Puttanesca

Won nicely over the same distance @ Ellerslie. Looks well placed again here.

Ellerslie R6. #2 Mr Tipsy

Needed the run at Te Rapa last week and will strip much fitter for this fairly easy assignment.

And I need another winner before I also become a laughing stock like mr racebase currently is

Ellerslie R8. #4 LATE ADDITION

Consistent 3yo whose last three runs, all this track and distance, have brought a third in $55k 3yo race to Derby fav Le Baron, fourth in Guineas on Boxing Day, third in similar race to this to Tabulate.

Matamata R3. #4 Al Qurhah

Friday's heavy rain around the country means mud will likely be flying at all venues this weekend. This bloke is on his home track, possesses a decent win strike rate, races well in a freshened state, just loves rain-affected going, and has won twice over the distance. What more could I ask? :D

Ellerslie R9. NZ Derby #3 Down The Road

Could be a dodgy day if the predicted heavy rainfall and nor' east gale arrives.

We'll scrap Down The Road as the Ellerslie meeting has been postponed til Sunday.

New tip
Trentham R3. #3 Tsonga - WIN $3

Should comfortably provide Hayden T with win #1001 8)

On track for an Ellerslie 1400m hat-trick and has previously won on rain-affected going.

Ellerslie R9. #4 BAKUP

A smart middle-distance three-year-old, just a touch below the best. At this distance, on this track, he’s run sixth in the Guineas Trial and the $150k GN Guineas and at Te Rapa last start he was half a length away in a $35k R80 race.

Trentham R7. #5 Smoking Chimneys
Useful stayer unsuited by the dodgy track surface at Ellerslie last start.
