If going on a Tiki Tour of the South Island to partake in some of their magnificent hospitality and a bit of punting, make sure you pack a blindfold and a dart, along with an up-to-date liftout formguide from the Herald or Dominion, in your travel bag. On the morning of the races, pin the form guide on the wall, put the blindfold on, and throw the dart, being careful to point yourself in the general direction of the form guide beforehand. Take whatever horse the dart pierces.
Going by the statistics of the performances of favourites on various tracks throughout the country, this is as good a method as any for finding winners in the South. Currently, South Island tracks hold 9 of the 10 worst places for return on dollar invested on the win tote for the TAB favourite. For example, since 1997, if you had bet on every favourite at Kumara, you would have received back a paltry 59c per dollar invested.
Conversely, North Island tracks hold 13 of the best 14 positions in the table.
